Short answer: a birthday invitation needs five things — whose birthday it is (and which one, if it matters), the date and time, the place, what kind of party it is, and how to reply. Everything else is tone. A kids' party can be playful and short; a 50th can be warm or elegant; a surprise party needs one extra line asking guests to keep the secret.

Below you will find copy-ready wording for children's parties, adult birthdays, milestone birthdays, surprise parties and small dinners, plus short messages for sending the invitation by WhatsApp. Use the copy button, change the names and details, and send.

What to include on a birthday invitation

Guests want to know four things at a glance: when, where, for how long, and what to expect. Kids' parties need a little more detail because parents are planning around them.

  • Whose birthday it is, and the age if it is a milestone or a child's party.
  • Date, start time and — for kids' parties — the pick-up or end time.
  • Place, with an address or map link.
  • What kind of party: dinner, pool party, costume party, bowling, picnic.
  • Anything guests need to bring or wear (swimsuit, costume, warm clothes).
  • How and by when to reply.

Kids' birthday invitation wording

Surprise party wording

A surprise party invitation has one job beyond the usual: making sure nobody spoils it. Say it is a surprise in the first line, give an arrival time that is earlier than the guest of honour's, and tell guests where to park or wait.

Classic

Short
Surprise party for Anna! Arrive by 6:45 PM, she'll be here at 7. Friday, March 12 · Bella's apartment Not a word to Anna!

No-gifts and other special notes

These lines are easy to get wrong. Keep them short, positive and on the invitation itself.

No gifts
Your presence is the only present we need — no gifts, please.
Donation instead of gifts
Instead of gifts, Mia would love a donation to the local animal shelter.
Siblings welcome
Brothers and sisters are welcome too — just include them when you reply.
Adults only
This one's for the grown-ups — we hope you can enjoy a night off!

Sending a birthday invitation by WhatsApp

Most birthday invitations now go out on WhatsApp. Instead of a picture that guests have to answer in the chat, send a link to an invitation with an RSVP button — replies are collected on one list, with the number of people coming. Ready-to-send texts are in our guide to WhatsApp invitation messages, and you can open a sample birthday invitation to see what guests get.

If you are wondering how to chase replies without being pushy, see what RSVP means and how to track it. Comparing tools first? Our overview of Evite alternatives covers prices, ads and guest limits.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I send birthday invitations?

Two to three weeks ahead for most kids' and adult parties, four to six weeks for milestone birthdays or parties that need travel. Send a short reminder a few days before.

How do I say no gifts on a birthday invitation?

Keep it positive and short: "Your presence is the only present we need — no gifts, please." If you prefer, suggest a donation to a cause the birthday person cares about.

Should I invite the whole class to a kids' party?

Many schools ask parents to invite either the whole class or only a few close friends, so nobody is left out. If you invite only some children, send invitations directly to their parents rather than handing them out at school.

What should a surprise party invitation say?

Say it is a surprise in the first line, give guests an arrival time before the guest of honour arrives, and end with a reminder to keep it secret.

Can guests RSVP to a birthday invitation without an app?

Yes, with Inviteroll guests open the link in their browser and tap Going, Maybe or Not going, with the number of people and a note — no app or account needed.
